Door Spray Painting in Manawatū

We spray paint doors in our own off-site spray booth, giving the finish a controlled workspace away from the job. Tell us how many doors you have, their material and condition, and the finish you would like for your Manawatū project.

A door finish planned around the whole project

Doors sit close to your eyes and hands. Light catches their edges, handles leave regular marks, and a glossy finish can reveal damage that was less obvious before. A good result starts with deciding what the door needs, rather than choosing a colour alone.

Our painting and decorating services include off-site door painting and airless spraying. For doors, our own spray booth takes the spraying away from the rooms being decorated. The material, existing coating and condition still determine the preparation and paint system.

A repaint can suit sound doors when you want a coordinated colour scheme or a different sheen. Swollen edges, loose joints, delamination or water damage need attention first. Send clear photos of those areas with your enquiry so we can discuss the right next step.

Our team is trade-qualified, and GDPD is a Master Painters member. For door work, we confirm the condition and coating system before agreeing the preparation and booth finish.

Spray painting doors: what affects the finish

Details to check before a door-painting quote
DetailWhy it matters
Door materialTimber, composite and previously coated surfaces need different preparation decisions.
Existing finishPaint, varnish, gloss and unknown coatings need assessment for adhesion and compatibility.
Flat or panelled faceProfiles, grooves and mouldings change the preparation and application work.
Damage and hardwareOld handle holes, chips and dents affect the repair scope.
Colour and sheenA major colour change and a higher sheen can make preparation more demanding.

For a sound varnished door, read our guide to painting over varnished wood. It explains why cleaning and an appropriate adhesion system matter even when the old finish looks smooth.

Choose the sheen as well as the colour

Consider the doors alongside architraves, skirting boards and walls. A matching colour can look different on each surface when the sheen changes. A satin or semi-gloss finish may offer a different visual balance from high gloss; the specific coating also controls its cleaning and wear characteristics.

Look at a physical colour sample in the room's daylight and evening light. Include both sides of the door in the decision when it connects rooms with different schemes. Record the colour name, code, product and sheen rather than relying on a photograph.

Our paint finishes guide helps you compare the appearance of lower and higher sheens. For a consistent result across several doors, discuss the full set together rather than treating each door as a separate colour match.

What to send our door painters

  1. Count the doors and tell us whether you want one face, both faces and edges painted.
  2. Include approximate height and width, plus photos of a complete door and any profiles.
  3. Photograph chips, peeling, swelling and the current handles or locks.
  4. Tell us whether the doors are fitted or already removed, and where the project is.
  5. Share your preferred colour, sheen and the stage of any wider renovation.
  6. Give us your preferred timing so we can discuss the work and its practical arrangements.

Confirm removal, transport, storage, hardware handling and refitting responsibilities before the job starts. Also confirm whether frames and architraves are part of the quote: spraying a door leaf does not automatically cover the surrounding joinery.

Handling and aftercare belong in the plan

A coating that feels dry can still be developing hardness. Packing, stacking, hanging and closing freshly painted doors too soon can mark the surface or cause sticking. Follow the coating-specific handling advice and keep protective wrapping from pressing against an uncured finish.

Plan a clean, dry place for the doors between finishing and installation. Once fitted, check clearance and use gentle cleaning appropriate to the coating. Abrasive pads and strong cleaners can change the sheen. Keep the colour and product details with your house records for future maintenance.

See our paint drying and curing guide for the difference between a surface that is touch-dry and one ready for regular use.
