Wallpaper Bubbles: Causes and Next Steps

Fresh wallpaper can look different while it dries, but persistent bubbles need a closer look. Identify whether the problem is trapped air, paste, movement in the paper or a weak wall surface before cutting or adding adhesive.

Bubbles in wallpaper: fresh or fully dry?

Start with the hanging instructions and the time since installation. Some papers change as moisture leaves them. If the paper is still in its normal drying period, avoid repeatedly pressing or puncturing small raised areas without checking the manufacturer's advice.

Take a photograph so you can compare the shape later. Keep the room at suitable, steady conditions; forcing rapid drying with strong heat can affect seams and movement. Once the specified drying period has passed, persistent bubbles deserve assessment.

Our wallpaper guide explains the preparation and paper choices that influence a successful installation.

What the bubble can tell you

Observations to make before a repair
ObservationWhat to investigate
A soft pocket that movesTrapped air or an area with insufficient adhesive.
A firm lumpDebris, excess paste or a defect in the wall.
Several bubbles on one wallBackground preparation, paste coverage or paper expansion.
Bubbles near staining or dampA moisture source behind the finish.
Raised areas with lifting seamsWider adhesion or drying problems.

These are clues, not a diagnosis from appearance alone. If the background is failing, attaching the paper to it again will not produce a lasting repair.

A careful repair path for a small dry pocket

Check that the paper is fully dry, the wall is sound and the surface can tolerate handling. Find the paper's repair instructions and a compatible adhesive. Delicate, metallic, handprinted or heavily textured papers may mark easily.

A local repair may involve introducing a small amount of suitable adhesive beneath the detached section and smoothing it gently, but the access method depends on the paper. A cut can remain visible or interrupt the pattern. Test a discreet area or have the installer assess it before cutting a prominent wall.

Use only the pressure needed to bring the paper into contact. Excess pressure can squeeze adhesive away or flatten texture. Remove any paste from the face only as the paper's care instructions allow.

When a patch is the better option

A hard lump, damaged face or stretched paper may not settle with adhesive. A matching patch or replacement drop can be more appropriate, particularly when spare paper from the same batch is available.

Pattern position matters. Keep the roll label and compare the repeat before cutting replacement material. Our pattern matching guide helps explain why a piece that has the right colour may still not align.

If the defect returns after a repair, investigate the wall condition and moisture rather than repeating the same fix.

Preventing bubbling wallpaper

  • Prepare a clean, sound background suited to the paper.
  • Use the specified adhesive and mixing method.
  • Follow paste-the-wall or paste-the-paper instructions exactly.
  • Keep any required soaking time consistent between drops.
  • Smooth methodically with tools suitable for the paper's face.
  • Allow steady drying conditions without forced local heat.

Where seams are also lifting, read our peeling wallpaper guide. If the paper is being removed for a new finish, use a controlled wallpaper removal method to protect the background.

Your questions

Will wallpaper bubbles disappear by themselves?

Some changes during normal drying may settle. Persistent bubbles after the paper's specified drying period need assessment.

Should I pop a wallpaper bubble?

Not before identifying the paper and the cause. A hole or cut can remain visible, and it will not fix a weak or damp background.

Can I use washing-up liquid to fix bubbles?

Use the adhesive and method specified for the paper. Household detergent is not a replacement for a compatible wallpaper adhesive.
