Part of our exterior house painting guide.
How long does exterior paint last?
There is no single interval that applies to every exterior system. The substrate, product, preparation, colour and exposure all affect performance. A shaded, damp wall can develop different problems from a sunny, exposed elevation.
Keep the original coating specification and any maintenance or warranty terms. Use them as the starting point for care and inspection. A stated product warranty has its own conditions and is not automatically the repaint date for every house.
Our exterior house painting guide helps turn the inspection into a practical scope.
When to repaint a house exterior: the warning signs
| Condition | What to do next |
|---|---|
| Loose, flaking or peeling paint | Assess adhesion and the preparation needed before further coating. |
| Bare or weathered timber | Check the timber condition and plan protection promptly. |
| Blisters | Investigate moisture, heat and coating compatibility. |
| Open joints or failed sealant | Assess water entry and repair requirements. |
| Persistent staining or damp | Find the source before decorating. |
| Fading or uneven appearance | Decide whether cleaning or repainting will meet your appearance goals. |
Colour fading alone is different from coating failure. Conversely, a wall can look acceptable from the street while lower edges or joints need attention.
Inspect by material and elevation
For timber, look at exposed end grain, edges, joints and areas around openings. Damaged or soft boards need repair before painting. The weatherboard guide explains the preparation questions.
For painted masonry, look for peeling, cracks, damp and salt deposits. Repainting without addressing the background may repeat the failure. If the brick has never been painted, use our brick painting decision guide before starting a new maintenance cycle.
Include fascias, soffits and joinery in your inspection notes. They may need work on a different schedule from the main wall.
Cleaning, maintenance or repainting?
Dirt and surface growth can hide the condition of a coating. A suitable cleaning method may improve appearance and make defects easier to see. It will not repair lost adhesion or weathered timber.
Use the coating manufacturer's maintenance directions and a cleaning method suited to the cladding. High pressure is not a universal solution; forcing water behind boards or damaging the surface creates another problem.
Small local defects may be repairable, but several failing areas can justify a wider repaint. Ask what is causing the failure and whether a patch will blend with the aged finish.
A repeatable inspection record
- Take dated photos of each elevation from the same position.
- Add close-ups of changes, especially around windows, joints and ground-level edges.
- Note shade, strong sun, vegetation and places that stay wet.
- Record leaks, repairs and previous coating details.
- Compare the photos after cleaning and during later maintenance checks.
This record helps distinguish a stable mark from a spreading defect. Arrange safe professional access for high or hidden areas rather than climbing to inspect them yourself.
Plan the work before the coating is widely failing
Early planning gives you time to decide colours, organise repairs and consider access. Extensive failure can mean more preparation than a sound maintenance repaint. Request an assessment when you first notice a pattern of deterioration.
Use the exterior painting timing guide to think about weather windows. Tell us what you have observed, rather than guessing a product or a repaint interval.
In Manawatū, longer spring and summer days can provide more working time, but check actual conditions. Delay application on damp or overheated surfaces, ahead of rain or dew, or below the coating's permitted temperature. The drying window matters as much as the hours spent painting.
Your questions
Should every side be repainted at the same time?
Not necessarily. Different exposures can age differently, but colour consistency, access and overall condition should be considered together.
Does faded paint mean the house needs repainting?
Fading is an appearance change. Check adhesion and substrate condition as well before deciding between cleaning, maintenance and repainting.
Can I wait until all the paint is peeling?
Widespread failure can increase the preparation and repair work. Seek an assessment when deterioration becomes apparent.
